Custom Illustration – Skinny Minority

Skinny Minority by Veronica Marche

A little while back, Karima Renee of The Skinny Minority commissioned a sketch to include in her brand imagining. Karima is a stylist and wardrobe consultant here in Philadelphia, and wanted an illustration to reflect her brand and her professional image.

The custom illustration is now part of the web banner over at Skinny Minority, and also included in Karima’s promotional materials. This project was particularly fun for me because Karima wanted to focus on the fabulousness of full-sized fashionistas (yay curvy gals!) a market that is growing leaps and bounds by the day. This year I’m definitely looking to add more plus work to my client and personal portfolios.

Happy Blogaversary to Marie Denee!

Curvy Glamour by Veronica Marche

Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista is one of the fairy godmothers of curvy girl blogging. She celebrated her five-year blog anniversary this month in high style, and I created this illustration  for a postcard included in the event’s gift bags.

As a curvy girl myself, I wanted to create a full-figured fashion sketch with lots of glamour and flair to spare. I was inspired by a Badgley Mishka dress and sketched this colorful ombre dress covered in paillettes. So much fun!

I hear Marie’s event was a blast, which is no surprise! I was so glad to help her celebrate and honored that she spotlighted my work in her gift bags. Thanks love! :o)

Welcome to 2014!

Happy New Year!

Man, I am super excited about 2014. I can’t put my finger on it, but it just feels like 2014 is going to be a great and exciting year for creatives. There are so many people undertaking so many cool new ventures and stepping out of their comfort zone. I can’t wait to see what materializes.

I have to say, 2013 was a year of surprises. My work got picked up by T.J. Maxx. I was profiled by The Philadelphia Inquirer. And my “Fabulous Brown Girl” holiday cards sold like hotcakes. The year was not without its struggles (and the struggles were many!) but 2013 definitely affirmed that this creative pursuit of mine could lead to some wonderful opportunities.

So what will 2014 bring? I certainly have my wishes. But my only real resolution this year is to implement and execute flawlessly — that is, bring 100% of myself to the table each and every day — and stay open to what the universe has in store. You can plan and wish and hope all you want, but at the end of the day, how you execute (or not!) is all that matters. In other words:

Do the work. And your work will make a way for you.

Cheers to a New Year!

Best Man Holiday and Nia Long

Nia Long by Veronica Marche

This weekend I went to see “Best Man Holiday,” the sequel to one of my favorite buddy comedies from the late 90s. I won’t post any spoilers, but I will say, I loved it! I might make a return trip to see it again.

I spotted one of the stars of the movie, Nia Long, on the cover of VIVA magazine, and I loved the photo so much that I had to recreate her as a sketch. The flared dress, the flirty pose and the flawless hair made her a prime subject for an illustration. Also… it’s NIA. Literally every guy friend I have has a major crush on her, and with good reason. She’s been flawless since we first saw her in “Friday,” and that was almost 20 years ago! I’ll have what she’s having, please and thank you.
