Fashion School Diaries: Aboriginal Inspired Swimwear

“Lizard Dancing” by Jeff Roberts

I had an ridiculously fun time doing my swimwear project. Maybe because I chose a great inspiration for a theme: aboriginal art. The earthy colors, the wildlife motifs, the kinda-sorta-pointilist mark-marking — love it ALL. It got even better when I found a swimwear fabric that mimicked the energy and feel of aboriginal works of art.

This is the final result of my project: a sporty monokini in a beautiful aboriginal-inspired print and yellow-gold accents.

Believe it or not, this suit was cut and sewn THREE times — once to get a feel for working with four-way stretch, again to get familiar with the specialty swimwear sewing machines, lastly to create the final suit. By the time I got to the third suit, I was a swimsuit-sewing wizard. The best part: since I was being super-cautious about not running out of fabric, I have more than enough yardage to make more and more swimsuits to my heart’s delight.

Veronica Marche for FASHION VICTIM

Eeee! It’s here!

I’m collaborating with my good friends at Contradiction Dance for their fall concert, “FASHION VICTIM.” It feels like being home again (even though we’re a couple hundred miles apart).

A little backstory: I met Kelly Mayfield (now Kelly King!) about five years ago when I was a dancer in Washington, D.C. I started going to her studio, taking her classes and found myself becoming more confident and comfortable with myself as a performer when she asked me to audition for Contradiction. It’s been a lovely, artistic friendship ever since.

When I moved to Philly last year, it was hardest to leave Contradiction behind. But thanks to technology (and Amtrak), I can still be a part of Kelly’s (and our writer/collaborator Melissa’s) creative process.

The image above is what will be on the program and all marketing materials for FASHION VICTIM. And more is to come soon. I’ll keep you posted. 😉

Veronica Marche featured on Black Bridal Bliss

This was an awesome surprise to wake up to.

On my way to campus this morning, I got an email (and a tweet!) saying my work is being featured on Black Bridal Bliss. Fantastic! Black Bridal Bliss is an online destination for brides and brides-to-be of color. They featured my work for Stephanie and Delano’s wedding, and I couldn’t be more excited. I think I smiled the entire ride to school.

Thanks Bridgette and the Triple B team for making my illustrations your pick of the week! It’s so appreciated!

Rock The Red Pump: Red Pump Project Commission

I’ve been super fortunate (and super stoked!) to work with some crazy-creative people doing awesome stuff in the past few years. One of them is Luvvie Ajayi, social media strategist and humor blogger extraordinaire. She wears many hats — or, shoes, I should say (it’ll make sense in a second) — but the one of the causes she’s most passionate about is HIV/AIDS awareness. Luvvie is co-founder of The Red Pump Project, a non-profit that addresses the impact of HIV in women and girls. And each they host the Rock the Red Pump Campaign, which gathers movers, shakers and thinkers all across the blogosphere to talk about how the disease is affecting our communities.

This year, Luvvie brought me on to create the official illustration for the “Rock The Red Pump” badge. And  it was so much fun to do. I mean, who can argue with drawing a woman’s favorite thing (shoes!) in support of an amazing cause? Luvvie wanted a funky yet fabulous image that would represent The Red Pump Project and the rainbow ofwomen who are involved in the cause of HIV awareness. I was happy to deliver.

It was so cool to be part of a social media campaign that has been growing so fast since it’s inception. And yeah, it was also pretty cool to see my work pop up unexpectedly when I visited some of my favorite bloggers. This is one of the things I love — image-making that supports a greater cause.
