Interview with the Philly Inquirer

Just a few weeks before Christmas, I sat down with Elizabeth Wellington from the Philly Inquirer. She and photographer Charles Fox stopped by my apartment to talk to me about illustration — specifically about my “Fabulous Brown Girls” holiday cards.

I have to say, as a former journalist, I’m used to being on the other side of the interview. But I had so much fun talking to Elizabeth about my cards (and nerding out about the journo biz) and posing for a few pictures with my illustrated gals.

This was easily one of the most exciting moments of the past year — being featured in major newspaper for doing the thing I love. I made sure to send several copies to my parents back in Pittsburgh.

But the best part? Elizabeth captured the whole reason I focus on women of color in my personal work:

In a world where public images of black women often teeter between miserable and maudlin, these cheerful holiday greetings seem right on time.

“If you went solely by what you see on TV and in the media, you would think that black women are devoid of joy,” Miller said. “The women I know laugh a lot. They love fashion, they work hard, and they are successful… And there is a lot of joy in our lives.”

You can check out the interview and slideshow here. And shout-out to Alex McKechnie at Drexel University for snapping a photo of the feature.

Welcome to 2014!

Happy New Year!

Man, I am super excited about 2014. I can’t put my finger on it, but it just feels like 2014 is going to be a great and exciting year for creatives. There are so many people undertaking so many cool new ventures and stepping out of their comfort zone. I can’t wait to see what materializes.

I have to say, 2013 was a year of surprises. My work got picked up by T.J. Maxx. I was profiled by The Philadelphia Inquirer. And my “Fabulous Brown Girl” holiday cards sold like hotcakes. The year was not without its struggles (and the struggles were many!) but 2013 definitely affirmed that this creative pursuit of mine could lead to some wonderful opportunities.

So what will 2014 bring? I certainly have my wishes. But my only real resolution this year is to implement and execute flawlessly — that is, bring 100% of myself to the table each and every day — and stay open to what the universe has in store. You can plan and wish and hope all you want, but at the end of the day, how you execute (or not!) is all that matters. In other words:

Do the work. And your work will make a way for you.

Cheers to a New Year!

Have You Found “Fabulous Brown Girls” Yet?!

Here, there, everywhere! I’m super excited that my “Fabulous Brown Girl” holiday cards are in stores now, and I’m even more excited that you guys have been sending pics from your trips to T.J. Maxx, Marshall’s and Home Goods.

The best part is hearing how excited people are to see fun and stylish black Christmas cards. And you guys are buying as many as eight boxes at a time! Greedy! But I’m not judging. 😉

My Christmas ladies have been spotted at T.J. Maxx in Washington, DC…

The girls have also been found in Norfolk, Dallas, Atlanta, and a host of other cities. They’ve even been selling out in some places. (Apparently the at the Georgetown T.J. Maxx sold out at the beginning of the month!) So you know what that means… y’all gotta scoop ’em up before they disappear!

Have you found “Fabulous Brown Girls” Christmas cards in your city yet? Tweet me a pic! You can find me at @veronicamarche.

P.S. Thanks to Kellee Knighten Hough, Daria Johnson and Yvonne Barrett for the pics!
